This shared memory is from Barry and Missy Pearson. Barry is Eugene's nephew and his sister Lenore's son. Barry and his brother, John, and sister, Christie, spent many summers at the family farm in Manistee, and those memories run deep and strong. Missy and Barry stopped by the farm about 12 years ago during a trip to Michigan, and were able to spend a few hours reminiscing with Eugene's brother, Albert. It was a treat for both of us.
We were so surprised and delighted when we received a phone call from Eugene a few months ago letting us know he was visiting his niece in Washington, D.C. only a few miles from where we live in Hyattsville, Md. Unfortunately, we had teh address wrong plus we had forgotten our cell phone and knew that Eugene would be standing outside his niece's apartment waiting for us. We were driving around northwest DC in a panic when a policewoman noticed our confusion and spent the next 20 minutes helping us figure out where Eugen was. She found him [we were following in our car], and welcomed him to Washington. Eugene found the whole episode pretty amusing. We went to a restaurant not too far away, and spent the next two hours with Eugene catching up on everything from family [he brought photographs!] to his many excurions around Michigan and beyond. He was so entertaining and full of life. We marveled at his energy and enthusiasm and especially at his willingness and stamina to drive from Michigan to Washington, stay 2 days, and drive back!
So, we were saddened and shocked at his sudden death. We want his family to know how much we enjoyed Eugene's company, and how lucky and happy Barry felt to spend this time with him. It was a lovely visit.
