Melissa Angela Karen Cook, 43, passed away on November 5, 2020 in Wellston, Michigan. Born on August 3, 1977 at Annapolis Hospital in Wayne, Michigan. Melissa is the youngest daughter of David Charles Cook and Patche Ann Wilkinson.

Melissa was a Jane of all trades - she loved working with people, working outside, and working in factories. Hard work never scared her. She was also an animal lover and was known to house geckos, snakes, dogs, cats, and would even leash up her 4’ pet iguana and take it for walks around the neighborhood. She loved warm weather, the water, and traveling.

Melissa will be missed by her siblings: Sherry (Dean) Thore of Buellton California; Scott (Brenda) Roberts of Taylor Michigan, Lori Thore of Holt Florida, Robert East of Phoenix Arizona, Wendy Wood of Athens Tennessee, David Cook of Kaleva Michigan, Tobey Cook of Wellston Michigan, and Maggie (Al) Shaughnessy of Irons Michigan.

A celebration of life for Melissa will be limited to immediate family only, due to COVID19 restrictions. Please reach out to Maggie Shaughnessy for further information.

As the baby of our family, this came as a shock to all of us. But today, I choose to go forward in remembering the woman that Melissa was. The traits that made her special enough to warrant the grief that we feel within us. The unique things that made Melissa exactly who she was. Inspiring, Funny, Silly, Quirky, and 100% Unforgettable.

Melissa was a friend. From childhood, Melissa and I were bosom buddies in a lot of ways. From rescuing a cat and hiding it in Dads car(and getting into trouble when it shredded his interior!) to skipping school and eating frozen pizzas (yes, we ate them frozen because we couldn’t go home to heat them)… Melissa always said that the cheese on it wasn’t that bad. In our early teen years, I remember having a hole cut into the wall that separated our rooms because Melissa didn't like to be alone at night. The hole allowed her to reach out and hold my hand at night if/when she got scared.

Melissa inspired. For myself, she inspired me to continue my education. The only reason I went back to school was because Melissa was mandated to finish school and she didn’t want to do it alone, so I did it with her. I fell in love with learning all over again. If that hand’t of happened, I am not sure if I would have become the knowledgeable woman that I am today. And we didn’t only go back to school together, we worked together as well. Melissa had anxiety when she was young, and she didn’t like to be without a familiar face. So, when she was ready to enter the workforce, I quit the job I had and we went to work together. Delivering newspapers throughout the nights, countless factories, movie stores, and even a sub shop. Our vehicle didn't have a radio, so we would sing and drive, pretending to be famous music stars.

Melissa was Silly. We spent every day, all day together for years. She was half of our comedy duo. She loved to laugh. We would make nachos and sit up all night watching comedy central comedians. All night, just laughing together. We also hosted our own kitchen show - well, we didn’t have an audience. Or a camera. But we did take commercial breaks to prep for our next segments. She loved being silly, and I am fortunate enough to have a million stories that I could share.

Melissa is 100% unforgettable. God tells us to let not our hearts be troubled, but mine feels so troubled - so broken - so heavy. My solace is that, today, Melissa’s heart is light. God has wiped away her tears, and she is in heaven - where there is no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall she have any more pain. God has healed Melissa, and I thank him for giving her the rest she so needed.

Melissa, you will be loved for the rest of my life.

Well baby girl, I know you're finally at peace, no more pain, no more fear. For all the laughs, tears, walks, all night talks, for all the goofy things you always did to brighten up the days. I remember. My heart misses you. The idea of losing my baby sister feels unreal, but along with all the pain there is solace in fact that I know God has a plan, a place and time for everything. I know you're okay now. I love you Melissa. Forever in our hearts.

Love you sis. I know we will never quite be the same, but I am thankful we have each other.

I will always remember Melissa as witty and funny. When we were teenagers I would come over and spend the night at Maggie's. Me, Melissa and Maggie would always go for walks. Alot of the times we would sing our heads off.😂 I'll always remember you my fun loving Melissia. ( I used to call her that as kids, to sound fancy) ❤️ Love ya sista.

I remember on one of those walks, either you or Melissa found sassafras growing and were so excited that you both knew what it was. I, of course, had no idea. Between the both of you, our walks were always filled with laughter and craziness. Thank you for being here for me during this horrible time. I love you, Brandy.
