My sister was runner up cherry queen in 1957. As runner up she filled duties the queen wasn't able to, one of these was to cut the ribbon at the opening of the Mackinac Bridge. She proudly played the baritone in the Northport Band, starting out in the six the grade when the horn was just about bigger than she was. She loved, with her husband, their Florida fishing buddies and also became long time friends with the Captain and the Mates. She loved to sing and had a beautiful clear voice. In childhood every night before going to sleep she sang Far Away Places. She also liked Found A Peanut, I made a deal with her to sing that song when she vacuumed. Growing up she liked to make brownies and fudge. She had a smile that captivated everyone. Her last trip grocery shopping, she asked for a half a loaf of bread.....still flashing her smile the bakery lady said you just pick out the one you want and we'll make it a half a loaf. She then asked if they were going to have Paczki’s - the yummy donut for Fat Tuesday. The Bakery lady didn't know what they were so asked another employee...the answer was yes and that pleased Dee....but again whatever magnet she has working for her ....we were half way through the store and the bakery lady came looking for us to tell her what favors they were going to have. That's the way it was whenever we went shopping.
When she and Bruce got married I came home from Minneapolis. It was the day before the wedding which was to be held in our front yard. They picked me up from the airport and then stopped at the Bakery to pick up the wedding cake. We parked in Front of the bakery, I stayed can the car and waited....they were gone quite awhile, came out, got in the car and slammed the doors.....with no cake. I asked what happened and they explained .the cake said Happy Birthday..I was shocked and said what did you do? Dee said, Bruce smashed it all over the floor. I asked Dee what are we going to do..she said "well..I guess I'll ask some of the ladies of the church to each make a cake. I felt SO bad....until Bruce drove up to the back of the bakery and picked up the cake! I never did find out why they cooked that story up but we laughed about it a lot. SO many stories....I hope they bring a smile!
LOVE YOU!!
