Goodbye to a Good Friend
I met Rod when he and I were about ten years old. We met at his dad's barber shop which was located near "Tonies," my parents' restaurant in Custer. We became good friends and when I look back, it was probably good that we attended different schools because we got into enough trouble as it was! We ate many meals together, both at our restaurant and at his home. It was during those meals that we'd plan our adventures. And there were many...some were legal...many were not! We put hundreds of miles on my Willys Jeep, covering the back roads of Mason County. We hunted everything that had two wings or four legs. We dynamited fish together. And when we decided to fish in a state fish hatchery, we were chased by Beckman, the game warden. Whatever scheme either of us came up with, we agreed upon. Nothing was too dangerous or too illegal to try. I have more Rod Shaffer stories than I can count. I happened upon Ron a few years ago when my wife and I visited Custer. We were sitting in the old Johnny's Restaurant when he came up to our table and said, "Joe Brazas...what are you doing here? I'm Rod Shaffer." My wife was as startled as I was. She had been hearing Rod Shaffer stories for years but wondered if the guy really existed and if any of the stories could possibly be true. She learned they were after Rod and I reminisced for a few hours. I'm glad I had the chance to see him that day. Rod was a great friend, and I'm sad to see him go. My sincere condolences to his family.
