Life Story for Lorraine Agnes Oseland (Brown)

Lorraine Agnes Oseland (Brown)
Surrounded by family, Lorraine Oseland, 99, of Ludington, passed away May 15, 2016 at Ludington Woods.

Lorraine Agnes Brown was born on January 16, 1917 at Big Point Sable. She graduated from St. Simon’s High School, as Salutatorian, at the age of 16, and then attended Marquette University for two years. She married Guy Oseland on August 12, 1939. After Guy returned from US Navy service in WWII, they moved back to Ludington, where Lorraine spent the rest of her life. Guy and Lorraine had six children, all of whom survive. They owned and operated Oseland Body Shop in Ludington, with Lorraine serving as bookkeeper.

Lorraine worked for the Department of Social Services for 16 years, and later created and operated her own company, Laray Lingerie. She also served on the Boards of the Ludington Public Library, St. Simon’s School, the Election Board and the Tax Review Board. She was an enthusiastic traveler, visiting places from Russia to China, as well as her personal favorite, The Holy Land.

An avid reader, Lorraine was well-versed on a variety of topics, had a lifelong passion for continuing education, and spent countless hours sharing that passion with others.

She was a tireless volunteer, working with Ludington Lakestride, Gus Macker, the Welcome Center, Volunteers for Literacy, Hospice, Petunia Patrol, and others. In 1986, the City of Ludington recognized her incredible service by naming her Citizen of the Year.

Lorraine was a lifelong blood donor, having donated 18 gallons of blood during her lifetime. She served as a reading tutor to countless adults, and helped distribute Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for over 20 years to residents in the Ludington area.

Lorraine is survived by her six children, Arnold (Suzanne) of Grand Blanc, Bruce (Melanie) of Cadillac, Dennis (Vicki) of Thompsonville, Susan of Elberta, Thomas (Luci) of Manistee, and David (Betsy) of Ada, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Oseland in 1975, as well as her brothers, Lawrence and Richard.

Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at St.Simon’s Catholic Church in Ludington at 11:00 am. Visitation will take place prior to the service, starting at 10:00am. Reception to follow the service, with interment at Pere Marquette Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to the Ludington Public Library, 217 E Ludington Ave., Ludington MI 49431, one of Lorraine’s favorite places in the world.

The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Ludington Woods for the care, compassion and companionship they so well provided to our mother for five years. The family also would like to thank Harbor Hospice for their care and assistance.

Please feel free to share a photo or memory with Lorraine’s family on her personal page at www.oakgrovefh.com. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements with Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Ludington.
