Janice Marie (Bouchard) Schichtel passed away Feb. 20, 2014. She was 74 years old. Jan was born Oct. 9, 1939 in Nahma, MI (a lumber town in the U.P.) to parents William and Loretta (Stratton) Bouchard. After the family moved to Muskegon, MI, Jan attended school there, graduating from Muskegon Catholic Central High School. After first meeting on Valentine’s Day at the insistence of Joe’s brother Phillip, Janice married Joseph Schichtel on June 25, 1960 in Muskegon and thereafter devoted her life to homemaking and to raising her four children.
Jan had a sweet personality that endeared young and old to her. Her gift of hospitality welcomed many into her home. As well she dearly loved visiting friends and family here at home or as far away as N. Carolina, Alabama, California, Hawaii, and Alaska. She also enjoyed camping with her family and walking the many trails, especially along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. After her children were all in school, Jan worked at St. John’s Furniture Factory and later at several area supermarkets. She was a devoted member of the Cadillac Revival Center, where she was the church secretary and an elder for many years. She especially loved worshipping through music and song, and had a gift for writing poetry and lyrics. God’s spirit shined through her in everything she did.
Janice is survived by her husband; her sons, Peter (August) Schichtel of New Castle, CA; Mark Schichtel of Charlotte, NC; Matthew (Hannah) Schichtel of Cadillac; a daughter, Kathleen Schichtel of Blowing Rock, NC; nine grandchildren: Christie, Jeremy, Thomas, and Christian of California; and Makayla, Laraiah, Ellian, Adrian, and Bristol of Michigan; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her surviving siblings are Linda (Jim) Benedict, and Ronald (Pam) Bouchard of Muskegon; David (Beverly) Bouchard of St. Pete’s, MO; Mary Bouchard of Grand Rapids; and Jean Meade of Montague. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Edmond of Cadillac; sister, Carolyn, and brother-in-law, Roy Foster, and infant sister, Theresa, of Muskegon.
A memorial service will be held at Cadillac Revival Center, 984 Plett Road in Cadillac, on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00 pm. Visitation with the family will be one hour before the service at the church. Rev. William Markham will officiate.
