George Carver Edwards, age 90 of Bear Lake died Friday, April 28, 2023, at The Maples in Frankfort, Michigan.
He was born on May 31, 1932, in Bear Lake, MI the son of the late Geo. Dean & Josephine (Haugen) Edwards. He was a graduate of Bear Lake High School Class of 1950, attended Northern Michigan College, and was a Graduate of the Wayne State University School of Mortuary Science. He also was a Corporal in the US Army serving during the Korean War. On August 27, 1955, he married Gloria Repo at the Church of the Brethren in Marilla, MI.
Carver was employed as a funeral director for over 50 years at the Edwards Funeral Home in Bear Lake, retiring in 2002.
Carver had a fantastic sense of humor and was known to many as a jokester. If you had the pleasure to spend time with him, you may have been on the receiving end of his antics.
He was a lifelong resident of Bear Lake, and an active community supporter. Carver and his wife Gloria were deeply involved in Bear Lake Days, where you could find him showcasing his museum of antiques, including himself! A favorite pastime was restoring his grandmother’s 1928 Chevy. He also enjoyed collecting “junk”.
The creation of the Manistee County Intermediate School District in 1967 was possible through many hours of dedication from Carver. His hard work helped to provide his daughter, Anne, as well as many other children with special needs, a school of their own. During his tenure on the ISD board, he was honored with the Master Diamond Award in 2009 for his service.
He also had been a member of the Bear Lake United Methodist Church, Bear Lake Lions, Bear Lake School Board, Bear Lake Museum, Bear Lake Promoters, and the Masons.
Survivors include his wife; Gloria Edwards, his children; Mary (Carl) Barnum of Frankfort, MI, Curtis Edwards of Oakes, ND, and Amy (Mike) Bennett of Mason, OH, grandchildren; Gloria, Amber, CJ, Dustin, Emily, Alicia, & Erica, and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter; Anne, and brother & sister-in-law Ken & Diana Edwards.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday May 3, 2023 at 11:00 AM at the Bear Lake United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Vanderlaan officiating. Military Honors will follow. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Bear Lake.
The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 4-7 PM and again Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until time of service.
Memorials in Carver’s name may be directed the Bear Lake Promoters or the Bear Lake Area Historical
Museum.
