Obituary for Sally S. Chapman (Snyder)

Sally Chapman, 92, of Manistee, MI, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2021, at Maple Ridge Manor in Manistee.

She was born on January 26, 1931, in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of the late Kenneth and Mary Louise (Lennon) Snyder.

Sally graduated from Barstow School for Girls in Kansas City in 1948 and went on to Kansas City Jr College for secretarial training.

She married William Lloyd Chapman on March 15, 1952, at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral in Kansas City, MO. After Bill served in the Army during the Korean War, they settled in Kalamazoo, then Grand Rapids, before moving to Bill's hometown of Manistee. They shared 57 wonderful years together before Bill’s passing in 2009.

Sally worked in retail sales at Halls of Kansas City for 4 years before working as a secretary for 2 years at Owens-Corning Fiberglass. She was also a home sales rep for Sarah Coventry Jewelry for 2 years then later became co-owner/manager of The Blue Whale antique & gift shop, with her husband Bill, in Manistee from 1975 until 1987.

Sally was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, where she sang for decades in the choir and served on the Vestry. She also was a member of the Manistee Civic Players, where she served as Box Office Manager and on the Board of Directors; the Manistee Art Institute; P.E.O (a philanthropic women's organization); and the Merchants Association and Manistee Chamber when she was a business owner. She was especially proud of work with her husband Bill in helping establish the first senior assisted living facility (Green Acres) in Manistee, as well as successfully raising funds for an elevator to make Holy Trinity a fully accessible church.

She found enjoyment from many things in her life. She had a deep appreciation for classical & organ music and loved writing personalized poetry. She also enjoyed playing Mahjong & Bridge as well as numerous other card and board games with anyone who was willing to challenge her. She loved being part of the Manistee Choral Society. Sally and Bill initiated the Victorian Christmas Carol Dinner which carried on for approximately 8 years. She was also fond of golfing as a member of MGCC. Most especially Sally loved keeping up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sally is survived by her children Peter (Cheryl Kurchin) Chapman and Libby (Tom) Richert; grandchildren Elizabeth (David) Nyitray, William (Lydia) Richert, Katherine Richert, Kyla (Ken) Ettinger, and Joel Chapman; great-grandchildren Troy, Kyle, and Faith Richert, Noah and Isabelle Nyitray and Everest Ettinger; nieces and nephews Wendy (Andy) Gaines, Skye (Kathy) Wittig, James “Chip” (Sang) Chapman, Lynn (Rusty) McIntyre, Mary (John) Cole, Gwyn (Gardner) Gist, Joan (Dave) Rowell, and Pat (Martha) Gardner.

Besides her parents and her husband Bill, Sally is preceded in death by her sister Anne (Bill) Wittig and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law.

Memorial Services for Sally Chapman will be held Saturday, May 27, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Celine Burke of Bend, Oregon officiating. Final interment will be in the Holy Trinity Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse Fund at the Manistee County Historical Museum, Manistee Civic Players, Manistee Choral Society or Michigan PEO Fund, Inc.
