Obituary for Gregory P. Libby

Gregory P. Libby, age 66 of Manistee, passed away on Friday September 30, 2022, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, after fighting a heroic battle with COVID-19 and the complications that followed.

He was born on August 13, 1956, in Marquette, Michigan the son of LeRoy and F. Suanne (Armstrong) Libby. Greg graduated from Manistee High School 1974 and was voted most popular by his classmates. He went on to earn his associates degree from West Shore Community College in 1982. In 1990 he got his Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University and then got his Master of Art in 2001.

On June 9, 1990, Greg married Kelly Hersey in a beautiful outdoor wedding in Manistee. They were able to share 32 wonderful years together filled with a lot of love and laughter.

Greg had numerous jobs before he was hired at Escanaba High School in 1990. He and his wife spent the next 24 years in the beautiful and welcoming community of Escanaba. He was a highly respected physics and chemistry teacher until his retirement in 2014. After retiring, Greg and Kelly returned to their hometown of Manistee.

He was the lead shooter for the Starry Night Fireworks Displays with the Hobart brothers. Greg was also a member in the Michigan Science and Teachers Association and was a teacher leader for the local ISD.

Greg was a scientist, a philosopher, and artist, and an outdoorsman. He was an avid reader and had an appreciation for all types of music. Greg loved to kayak and ride his motorcycle. Above all else, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly; brothers Stephen “Steve” (Alison) Libby of Allendale, MI, Randall (Lisa) Libby of Manistee, MI, Nathaniel “Daniel” Libby of Trinidad, CO; sister Linda (Darren) Kava of Manistee, MI; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many other family and friends.

Greg was preceded in death by his infant son David Lee Libby in 1995, his father LeRoy in 1991, and his mother F. Suanne in 1985, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life for Greg will be held on Saturday October 15, 2022, at 3:00 PM at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee. Family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the time of service.

A second Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday October 29, 2022, at 1:00 PM at the Escanaba High School Auditorium in Escanaba, MI.
