Obituary for Marie Anna Ketz (Sievert)

Marie Anna Ketz, age 94 of Manistee, went home to her Heavenly Father on Saturday September 17, 2022.

She was born on February 15, 1928, in Manistee, Michigan, the daughter of the late Ernest Emil and Dessie Mae (Alspach) Sievert. Marie attended Flynn Elementary School and graduated from Manistee High School. On August 29, 1946, at the Scandinavian Methodist Church, Marie married Herman Gustav Ketz and they shared 46 years together before Herman’s passing on November 14, 1992.

Marie was a stay-at-home mom, raising four children. She had seasonal work at Cohodas and Jebavy-Sorensen Orchards during cherry and apple harvest.

She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and Faith Covenant Church. She sang in the choir, furnished home grown flowers for church bouquets and baked cookies for church events for 20 years. Marie was in the Prison Ministry with CBI out of Grand Rapids for 10 years.

Besides for singing in the church choir, Marie and her husband, Herman, who played guitar, sang country western duets for many informal events. She and her sisters, Dorothy, Betty, and Maralee sang in a quartet and trio for family and church. Marie helped with the music at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility for her church. She later sang with her nephew Don Pelarski at the Senior Center on River Street.

Marie loved gardening, especially flowers. She was an artist, painting pictures, welcome signs, saws, mailboxes, picnic baskets and more. Most of her work was given away as gifts to family and friends. Marie also loved to travel with Herman to many sights of interest in the United State and Canada.

Marie will be dearly missed by her children Ronald (Ruth) Ketz of Manistee, Todd (Kay) Ketz of Ludington, and Lori (Keith) Crawford of Free Soil; grandchildren Sky, Jason, Joshua, Jodie, Graham, Kelly, Jenny, Ashley, Charles, Jennifer, Kevin, and Weslyn; great-grandchildren Zepharien, Hannah, Hailie, Hazelle, Bridger, Lakyn, Nicole, Ethan, Hunter, Rudy, Riley, Rose, Scarlet, Leticia, and Tyler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She loved her whole family unconditionally. Her love language was a full cookie jar that to this day her family raises the lid to look inside for home baked goodness.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Herman, Marie was preceded in death by her daughter Kristine Ketz; brothers Robert, Donald, Fred, Leslie, Philip, Jack Sievert and their spouses; and her sisters Dorothy (Arnold) Fredrickson, Betty (Darrell) Smith, and Maralee (Robert) Edenburn.

A Memorial Service for Marie will be held on Saturday October 1, 2022, at 3:00 PM at Faith Covenant Church with Reverend Erik D. Carlson officiating. Family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions can be made to Faith Covenant Church and/or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
