She was born August 20, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Joseph and Phoebe (Bennett) Preston. On March 1, 1947, Hilda Mae married Alexander Stewart Jr. in Detroit. They moved to Berkley, MI and raised their family. They shared 64 years together before Alex’s passing on December 12, 2011.

Hilda Mae had attended Business School in Detroit and went on to be an elementary school secretary at Berkley Schools for 28 years before retiring in June of 1991. After retiring, she spent her time between Manistee and Stuart, Florida. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Stuart.

She enjoyed spending her time crafting, gardening, and volunteering in her children’s activities: Girl Scouts, Rondeau Youth Commodore, President of the PTA, and Berkley Hockey Association Secretary. One of the loves of her life, besides her family, was her summers spent at Rondeau Park, Canada on Lake Erie.

Hilda Mae is survived by her children Nancy (Brent) Danielson of Manistee, MI, Alexander Stewart III of Berkley, MI, Cynthia (Jim Anderson) Hobart of Manistee, MI, and Paul (Darcie) Stewart of Manistee; grandchildren Daven Danielson of Grand Rapids, MI, Megan (Steven) Ostrow of Dewitt, MI, Duane (Nichole) Hobart of Scottville, MI, April (Brandon) Saugie, Cayla Stewart, and Ian Stewart; granddaughter-in-law Tammi Danielson of Croswell, MI; great grandchildren Brittney, Brenton, Bradley and Brianna Danielson, Penelope and Elias Ostrow, Odin and Thorin Saugie, and Ayden Hobart.

In addition to her parents and her husband Alexander, Hilda Mae was preceded in death by her sisters Eva Ridall, Edna Wellman, and Cora Shollack; and her infant children Karen Mae and Daniel.
