Obituary for Manuel Joe Vega

Manuel Joe Vega, age 69 of Manistee, passed away on Friday August 19, 2022, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.

He was born on June 23, 1953, in Niles, Michigan, the son of the late Amado and Virginia (Pedraza) Vega. He attended Spitler Elementary School, St. Gregory’s Catholic School in Hart, and then graduated from Muskegon High School.

Manuel was employed at the Little River Casino in Manistee for over 19 years where he was an all-games dealer before retiring in October of 2019.

He was a lover of the outdoors, spending his time bird watching, gardening, working in his yard, and deer hunting in his younger years. Manuel loved playing pool; he played on a pool league at Landmark Bar in Muskegon for over 20 years. He enjoyed keeping busy by fixing anything that he could find and was an excellent electrician.

Manuel is survived by his children Jacob Vega, Nicole (Jerome) Valero, and Manuel Joe Vega II; 12 grandchildren, including Liliana and Inocencia Valero who he had a special bond with; 6 great-grandchildren; his siblings Tony (Delores) Lozano, Robert (Olga) Vega, Maria (Steve) Mayo, Calistro Vega, David Carlos (Patti) Vega, Virginia (Michael) Clark, Alice Vega, Gloria Vega, Duane Vega, and David Vega; his sister-in-law Nancy Vega; and many other family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Manuel was preceded in death by his brothers Felipe Benevidez, Don Vega, Amado Vega, and Tom Vega, and his former spouse Nadine Vega.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday August 30, 2022, at 2:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee with Father Zelijko Guberovic celebrant. Family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee, with a time of sharing from his daughter and granddaughter at 1:15 PM. Following the mass, a luncheon will be held at the Aki Community Center, 2953 Shaw Be Quo-Ung, Manistee, MI 49660.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family.
