Obituary for David R. Hendricks

David R. Hendricks, age 74, passed away quietly at home on January 9, 2022, his wife Susie at his side.
Born in Sturgis, MI, on January 27, 1947, David grew up on the family dairy farm in White Pigeon, MI. David was very active in 4H throughout his high school years. Through his involvement in 4H, he was able to travel to New York City and Washington DC where he met Lady Bird Johnson and shook hands with Robert Kennedy. In 1968 David represented the state of Michigan as a 4H representative to the National 4H Congress.
David graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in secondary education and began his teaching career at White Pigeon High School. In 1975 he began his long teaching career in Manistee. In addition to classroom teaching, David was class advisor to many classes, coached Forensics and Debate, and served as advisor for Chippewa Herald Student paper. He was president of the Manistee Teachers Association for 11 years and served on the MAPS Board of Education for five years.
After retirement in 2002, David underwent a lung transplant but continued to enjoy camping, sailing, and living in Florida during the winter months. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family and dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Susie, son David Picardat, daughter Jennifer (Eric) Bielas, grandsons Bodie Bielas and Barrett Bielas, and sister-in-law Gerri Hendricks, niece Julie, and nephew Ted.
He was preceded in death by his mother Wilma, father Delvin, and brother Douglas.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee. Family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until the time of service.
