NELSON, Herbert Eugene, “Herb”, age 98, formerly of Lake Leelanau, MI passed away Friday, November 8, 2019. He was a graduate of Leland High School, and received degrees from the Louis Schafen School of Business, Traverse City Michigan, and The Walsh College of Accounting in Detroit Michigan. Herb was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland, MI. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and was married to the former Marthabel Stewart of Beulah and Leland, MI in 1944 at Northville, MI. The couple had three children, Nancy Lee, Stuart Allan, and Travis Andrew. Herb served honorably in the Army Air Force during World War II and was with the 8th Air Force on Okinawa where he served as a remote turret technician. Herb was employed by Fuel Oil Corporation in accounting, sales of Heavy Oil, and as the Marine Superintendent for company ships on the Great Lakes. During this time period he was active in the Propeller Club, Port of Detroit, serving on the Board of Governors. While living in Livonia, MI, Herb sat as a member of the Livonia School Board Advisory Committee and then served as a member of the board until leaving it to devote time to his own business, Nelson’s Livonia Picture Framing and Art Supply Co. The wholesale portion of this business was later moved to Traverse City, MI and is now owned by his son Travis Nelson. Herb was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Nellie Nelson, wife Marthabel, daughter Nancy Marble, granddaughter Megan Marble, brother Orlean and Sister Jane. He is survived by his sister May Purvis of Traverse City MI, son Stuart Nelson of Bethesda, MD, son Travis Nelson of Cedar, MI, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be planned for the spring when Herb’s family can gather together in Leland, MI. The family would like to express their thanks for the wonderful care given by Munson Medical Center and Munson Hospice of Traverse City. If desired, friends may make memorial contributions to Immanuel Lutheran Church of Leland, 303 East Pearl Street, Leland, Michigan 49654, 231-256-9464 or to Munson Hospice House, 450 Brook Street, Traverse City, MI 49684, 800-252-2065

We send our most sincere condolences to Travis and family on your loss of your father Herbert. He accomplished much in his life, most notably his lovely family. I (Judy) taught at Leland High School while Travis was a student there and enjoyed our connection over those years. I had met Herb and Marthabel during that time, and had seen them a bit at Travis' hunting camp on Sharnowski Rd. We have enjoyed our connection as neighbors with Travis and his two lovely gals for many years since those Leland School days.
May Herb now rest in peace, and we will keep the Nelson family in our thoughts and prayers.
Judy and Glenn LaCross

I had the pleasure of knowing Herb later in life. He was in a golf league at Northport Creek in Northport. His playing partner was Dr. James Kolberg a good friend of mine who passed away 2 months ago. Everyone was amazed that Herb could play a decent round of golf into his mid 90's when most of us were 12 to 18 years younger than Herb. Herb was a gentleman and always enjoyed his time with his golf associates. Three years ago, at our awards meeting, I brought my 1957 High School year book "Pioneer" Bentley High School in Livonia which was my graduating class. On page 7 was Herb's picture, recognizing him as a Livonia School Board Trustee. As a student at Bentley, I did not know Herb, but did know of his picture frame business, which I believe was at Five Mile and Farmington roads in Livonia. Herb was very handsome in 1957 and continued to be as he aged. He will be missed, but he certainly lived a full life. Rest in Peace.
