I had Miss Fields for 2nd and 3rd grade in Muskegon Heights Public Schools. She was a loving, kind and wonderful teacher. Although soft-spoken, I never recall her having a problem with any child. I loved going to school, especially with her as one of my teachers. She would write a poem on the board for us to copy to practice our penmanship. We were learning to write. I was thrilled when I found out I would have her for 3rd grade too. She was always special to me, a favorite in all my schooling. I am very sorry I did not know where she lived. I would have liked to send her a thank you letter for being such a great teacher, always prepared, focused, nice and in her soft way she always accomplished her goals.
It is amazing how much kindness can accomplish. When you are starting school, you are scared. You don't know what to expect. You don't want anyone who demeans you or yells at any student. Scaring students does not foster learning. She never did anything negative to anyone. Never raised her voice.
I went on to receive a B.A. and M.L.S. (Master's in Library Science) from the University of Michigan. I have been a public librarian, a high school media specialist and now an academic librarian at a local college, totaling 45 years. I have always loved my profession.

My husband has terminal cancer and it has been extremely challenging the past nearly three years since his diagnosis with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma Mantle Cell. The biggest lesson I have learned is that in any circumstance, the most important and most effective outreach anyone can do for another is extend love and kindness. God bless you Miss Fields. You will always be special to me. You represent love and kindness.
