She graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1950. She married Donald W. Jones on December 31, 1950. After Don returned from Korea they moved to Manistee having purchased the Riverside Motel. As owner/ operators of Riverside, Don and Dorothy became actively involved in Manistee as small business owners, joined the Jaycees, the Manistee Elks Lodge and The Manistee Golf and Country Club. As a couple, throughout the years, they were involved in many real estate ventures and businesses, including Harbour Real Estate.
Dorothy was a very active, long time member of West Shore Hospital Auxiliary; over her 49 years involved in the auxiliary, she served as chairperson several times for the popular celebrated fund-raising event ‘The Formal Charity Ball', her favorite event of the season. Dorothy could be seen for years as a greeter in the hospital at the information desk. She considered herself “retired” from her post in the hospital, as she served as a volunteer for so many years. She loved meeting and greeting people and always had a beautiful smile upon greeting friends and strangers alike. She was very active in her children's school activities, the Manistee Band Boosters, the Red Cross Blood Bank and served on the United Way board for 6 years. She was a golfer, enjoyed bowling on a league and family boating vacations around Lake Michigan. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Valesca Compton; five older brothers, Curtis, Marion (Mick), Loren, Phillip, and Richard (Dick).
She is survived by her husband of 69 years Donald, their son and daughter-in-law Duane (Darla) Jones and daughter and son-in-law Deanne (Lars) Berentsen, Grandchildren, Donald Jones, of Milwaukee, WI, Alexandra “Ali” Jones, of Traverse City, U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Evan Weston of Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Avery Weston of Berne, IN; 3 step-grandsons, Nick, Jake and Tom Berentsen, all of Manistee, in addition to many nieces and nephews.
