Obituary for Harold Steven Olen

Harold Steven Olen, Age 89 of Manistee died Friday, July 20, 2018 at Munson Healthcare Manistee Hospital.
He was born on July 23, 1928 in Manistee, MI the son of the late Stephen J. & Alma F. (Kosiboski) Olen. He was a graduate of Manistee High School Class of 1946. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II and the Korean War. During June of 1947 he served as personal body guard for General Douglas MacArthur in Corregidor. He also received a special citation as a member of the General’s Honor Guard for a parade in Chicago. On October 20, 1950 he married Vera Irene Wright at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crown Point, Indiana.
Harold was a composition foreman at the Manistee News Advocate where he had been employed for 46 years. Since 1971, along with his son Paul he installed and maintained swimming pools.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manistee. He was a member of the Men’s Club, had served as a member and president of the Board of Education, was a member of the Dart Ball Team and the Luther Layman’s League, and was an Elder for the last 15 years. He also was a Life Member of VFW Walsh Post #4499 in Manistee. He was a real family man enjoying many vacations, outings, & fishing trips. He also worked on many projects with his brother Arthur.
He is survived by his wife: Vera I. Olen of Manistee, 5 children; Heidi (Mark) Varenhorst of Ludington, David B. (Judy) Olen of Manistee, Steven Olen of Big Rapids, Peter (Christine) Olen and Paul H. Olen also of Manistee, 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, one brother; Arthur C. Olen of Manistee, one brother-in-law: Earl C. Wright of Detroit, nieces, nephews, and his new puppy; Mia.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son; David H. Olen.
Funeral Services for Harold S. Olen will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 2:30 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manistee with Pastor Dennis Rahn officiating. Military Honors by the Manistee United Veterans Council will follow. Burial will be Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until time of service at 2:30 PM. A luncheon will follow the service
