Harless W. Feagins, Age 91 of Onekama died Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Green Arces of Manistee.
He was born on August 10, 1926 in Decatur, Texas the son of the late Harless & Edna (Harris) Feagins. He was a graduate of Frisco High School Class of 1943. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1944. Upon being injured on ship he was admitted to the Navy Hospital in San Francisco, CA where he met his future wife. He and Audrey L. Hemke were married in Milwaukee, WI on February 15, 1947. She preceded him in death on September 23, 1999.
Harless joined Rhea Mfg. Company in Milwaukee, under a service training program and came to Manistee in 1949 as Plant Manager for Glen of Michigan and purchased the company outright from Jack Winter, Inc. in 1971. He also served as a Director of Security National Bank for 20 years.
He served the Manistee County Chamber of Commerce in several capacities during the 1950-60’s as Industrial Chairman, Convention Chairman, Membership Chairman, and was president of the Chamber in 1965, at which time the present building was erected. He also awarded the first Titan of Industry Award. He served on the Executive Board of the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce from 1975-1981.
In 1966 he was one of ten Michigan citizens chosen to receive the Volunteer Leadership Award before both house of the State Legislature and the following year, 1967, he received a Michigan Minute Man Award, both presented by Governor George Romney.
In April of 1965, Feagins, along with four other civic-minded businessmen, organized what was known as The Tuesday Committee. The committee received much recognition throughout the state, including the Keep Michigan Beautiful Award in 1966 and the Holiday Beautification Award from Holiday Magazine in 1967.
He also served on the Advisory Council of the State of Michigan 4-H Foundation during the 60’s and 70’s and set up the County 4-H Scholarship in 1992. In 1989 he set up SCORE (Service Corp. of Retired Executives) for Manistee, serving as chairman for many years. He also was a member of the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame.
Other Memberships included Rotary – past president & Paul Harris Fellow in 1993, Elks – Life Member & Past Exalted Ruler, Eagles – State of Michigan Eagle of the Year 1970-71, VFW – Life Member & Community Service Award 1963, American Legion, DAV, Manistee Golf & Country Club – President 1961-65, as well as numerous trade business associations.
Harless is survived by a daughter; Suzie (Jim) Jacobs of Onekama, one son; Michael (Teresa) Feagins of Manistee, Erika (Andy) Freds of Mt. Pleasant, Matthew & Stephanie Feagins of Manistee, step-great grandchildren; Alex & Cassie Freds, one sister; Monna (A.D.) Brown, two brothers; Kenneth (Leatha) Feagins and Edwin Feagins, and sister-in-law; Eveleta Feagins all of Texas. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson; Jeff Jacobs, two brothers; Jimmy & Gibson Feagins, and two sisters; Mary McGraw & Jewell Dunn.
Funeral Services for Harless W. Feagins will be held Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM at the Oak Grove Funeral Home in Manistee with Pastor James Friesner officiating. Military Honors by the Manistee United Veterans Council will follow. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Members of the Manistee Elks Lodge #250 will conduct Memorial Services at 7:30 PM Monday at the funeral home where friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 PM, and again on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until time of service.
