Carol Dewyer went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 22nd after a courageous three month battle with cancer.
Carol Fern Dewyer was born November 11th, 1937 in Ludington, where she lived her entire life. She grew up with four brothers and three sisters and is survived by her sister Margorie Dewyer and brother John Dewyer, both of Ludington along with brothers Tom Dewyer and Ray Dewyer both of Tucson Az.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma Marie (Roberts) and Leo Charles Dewyer and sisters Marion Nephew and Lois Setterbo and one brother, Robert Dewyer. Carol was the baby of four girls and had fond memories of family picnics, trips to the beach and Sunday drives.
An LHS graduate of 1956, Carol enjoyed many years of playing sports, especially rec. softball. After High School, she spent three years studying under established writer, Mary Frances Donor. Her time with Mary was well spent and much enjoyed as Carol had several of her short stories published in various magazines.
Carol loved gardening and raising plants of all sorts. Following graduation, she worked at P.M. Floral and attended the Sixth St. greenhouses. For over 25 years, Carol raised an impressive vegetable garden along with blooming plants and a variety of flowers. She worked for Floral Craft of Ludington for over 21 years, retiring in 1997. This was another perfect job fit for Carol as she always enjoyed craft projects of all sorts and had participated in many craft shows through out the years in the surrounding counties. Carol did everything from marble figures to needle work, sewing, candle making and her latest passion, twilling and card making. She took great pride in making her own Christmas and Birthday cards and giving them out to family and friends for all occasions.
Travel was another life long passion of Carols. She enjoyed many trips across the country with friends and family. She made annual trips to both Nashville and Mackinaw Island and participated in the Labor Day Bridge walk over a dozen times in her life. She visited 49 States missing out only on the state of Hawaii. She has seen over 100 lighthouses on the Great Lakes and has been to all of the Canadian Providences. Carol also traveled over seas visiting Rome, Italy, Ireland and her favorite “The Holy Lands”. She also takes claim to seeing three Worlds Fairs; 1964, 1967, and 1982 and enjoyed both an Alaskan & Caribbean cruise.
Although Carol never married or had children of her own, she was thankful for her siblings who blessed her with 15 nieces and nephews to enjoy and share family times with. She was eventually blessed with 17 more great nieces and nephews and 23 great great… Carol rarely missed a ball game, concert, birthday, shower or wedding. She treated them all like the children that she never had, always making holidays special with special treats.
Carol was a very close with her creator and taught Sunday School for over 30 years, spreading the message of God’s Love. She was also a co leader for Girl Scouts and helped out with 4-H. She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she was dedicated to making hundreds of plastic canvas crosses for both her church’s Prayer Shawl Ministry and an orphanage in Kenya where one niece and nephew are missionaries. Carol also spent countless hours transforming the church’s Library into a self serve/user friendly library, logging in hundreds of books and CD’s onto computer files.
In later years, one of Carols favorite past times was working on her computer, watching pro-tennis and pro football on T.V. and watching movies. She was also a BIG Michigan Football Fan!
You are invited to a celebration of Life for Carol Dewyer on Saturday, May 12th, 2018 beginning at 11:00 am, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1101 S. Madison St., Ludington with the Reverend William Huether officiating.
Memorials in Carol’s name may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church or the Ludington Relay for Life.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Ludington.
