Eugene A. Bischoff, Age 82 of Arcadia went to be his Lord, Tuesday, June 28, 2016.
He was born on April 23, 1934 in Arcadia, the son of the late Herman A. & Lillian (Rehbein) Bischoff. He graduated from Arcadia High School in 1952, attended Muskegon School of Business 1952-53, graduated from Benzie County Normal in 1955 and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Central Michigan University in 1964.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Frankfurt Germany from 1957-59 in the financial/payroll department for the 317th Engineering Battalion.
Eugene was employed as a teacher at the Thompsonville School from 1956-57 and at Kaleva Elementary School from 1960 – 1988. He loved his Brethren Bobcats and attended as many basketball games as he could. He also worked summers for many years and the Frankfort A&P Store.
He was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia. He taught Sunday School for 65 years and served as superintendent for about 20 of those years as well as serving as president of the Manistee/Wexford County Sunday School organization for area Lutheran church’s (MSC) until they disbanded. A member of the Trinity choir since high school he also served as organist from 1975-2007. He also was church secretary for 20 years and financial secretary for more than 12 years.
As a member of the Arcadia community he was Arcadia Township Treasurer from 1982-1996. He also served as deputy treasurer. He was treasurer for Pilgrim Home Cemetery for about 20 years, and a board member for Pilgrim Home and Conway Cemetery for many years. He also was relief Postmaster at the Arcadia Post Office from 1988-1999, served on the First Arcadia Area Historical Museum Commission, currently membership chairman, as well as serving as secretary of the Pleasant Valley Community Center.
Eugene enjoyed traveling in Europe, cooking, gardening, playing cards, and singing in the church choir.
Survivors include a niece; Lisa (Bruce) Beeker of Traverse City, a nephew; Jeff (Amanda) Harthun of Bear Lake, 2 great nephews; Matthew and Nicholas Garvin, brother-in-law; Walter “Doc” (Clara) Harthun of Bear Lake, as well as numerous cousins.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters; an infant and Jeanette Harthun.
Memorial Services for Eugene A. Bischoff will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia with Pastor Jim Metcalf officiating. A luncheon will be held, followed by burial and Military Honors by the Manistee United Veterans Council at 1:30 PM at Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
Memorials in Eugene’s name may be directed to the Arcadia Historical Museum, the Pleasant Valley Community Center, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia.
