Obituary for Henry "John" Schimke

Henry “John” Schimke of Manistee, MI and Orlando, FL passed away
peacefully on April 20th, 2019 surrounded by family. John was born
June 4, 1944 the son of the late Henry and Marie (Olson) Schimke of
Onekama MI. John graduated Onekama High School with the class of
1962. Upon graduation he served his country enlisting in the United
States Marine Corps. After his service, John attended college on the
GI Bill receiving his degree in Law Enforcement from Delta College.
John was in the Michigan State Police 65th recruit school and began
work as a trooper, being stationed at the St. Clair Post. John also
served with the Michigan State Police in Bay City for many years and
was promoted and transferred to the Northville Post in Detroit as
Detective Sergeant. John joined the family business, Liquid
Dustlayer in Manistee in 1975 where he spent the rest of his life active
in the community. John was an enthusiastic member of Rotary,
participating in the annual Rotary show which he loved, and chairing
the Rotary Antique Shows. He was a member of the First
Congregational Church, UCC of Manistee. He belonged to the
Manistee Golf and Country Club for 30 years and was an avid golfer
having achieved every golfer’s dream of a hole in one on that course.
John was a life member of the Free and Accepted Masons of
Michigan, Manistee Lodge #228. He also served on the MRA Board,
acting as a ski chaperone and coaching and sponsoring all sorts of
sports teams in the Manistee area.
John was a voracious reader, he enjoyed history, civil war, and
biographies, and always had a book on his nightstand.
John was courageous, generous, hardworking and “gutsy” he was
unafraid to jump into any project. His fun-loving attitude that he
brought to every encounter will be sorely missed by those who
experienced it.
John was also preceded in death by his brother Darwin and
sister-in-law Gloria Schimke; his sister Norene and brother-in-law
Mickey Peterson; his brother Larry Schimke and nephew Benjamin
Schimke.
John is survived by his wife of 51 years. Jane Rademaker Schimke,
His daughters; Jennifer Scarlata (Michael Owens) Stefanie Schimke
(Clyde) Watson of Chuluota, FL; Samantha Schimke (Michael
Wierzbicki) of Orlando, FL; His Sons, Adam Schimke of Manistee and
Jared Schimke of Ann Arbor MI, and sister-in-law Martha Schimke.
John is also survived by his grandchildren Eleanor and Evan Scarlata;
Avery, Ainsley and Zachary Watson; Avner and Alexander Wierzbicki;
and step-grandchildren Cody, Noah, Rachael and Grace Owens.
Memorial Service for John will be Monday April 29th at 11:00am with
visitation beginning 10:00am at Oak Grove Funeral Home located at
309 Parkdale Avenue in Manistee, Pastor Elizabeth Hoy officiating.
