Donald Richard Stewart, age 90, of Brethren, MI, passed away April 4, 2018 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
Donald was born July 23, 1927 in Detroit, MI to the late George and Beatrice (Kline) Stewart. He attended Fordson High School and served 8 years in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. On June 2, 1979, Donald married Mary Johnson in Garden City, MI. Donald retired from a career in sales and promotion in September, 1989.
Donald was especially proud of his wife Mary and their 38 years of marriage as well as the 4 daughters that he raised. He was very proud of each one of them. He was also grateful for his career and the fact that it provided a good living for his family. Public service was a very important part of his life. He was a member of the Jaycee’s, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce (from his days in Garden City), Brethren Boosters and his time on the KND School Board. Donald was also a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church. It was his time on the School Board that he felt he made the biggest impact. He was glad to work with other leaders such as Greg Webster and the other board members. Another point of pride was working with Tom Nyquist to establish a community education program within the KND School District, as well as their working together on the Dickson Planning Commission.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Susan Jensen.
Survivors include his wife Mary, Daughters; Linda (Dave) Miller, Peggy Pierce and Nancy (Terry) Randall, Grandchildren; David (Stephanie) Miller, Jeff (Louisa) Miller, Shanna (Geoff) Moore, Robert (Vicky) Fugate, Daniel (Samantha) Fugate, Heidi Pierce, Kevin Pierce, Tara (Cody) Rogier and David Randall, Great-grandchildren; Juliette & Rocky Fugate, Breona & Ryan Moore, Alexandria, Bella, Molly and Felix Fugate and Annabelle Rogier. Many friends and family are feeling his loss.
Memorial services for Donald will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Brethren, MI at 11:00AM with Pastor Laurie Koivula officiating. Military Services will be conducted by Rolling Thunder Michigan Chapter #1 and the VFW Bear Creek Post #6333. Interment will take place at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI. Memorial contributions in Donald’s name can be directed to the Epworth United Methodist Church.
