Obituary for Sophie Yanusz

Sophie Yanusz
Sophie Yanusz, age 91, of Ludington, passed away on December 21, 2017.

Sophie was born on November 15, 1926, in Freesoil, the daughter of John and Barbara Kran. She graduated from Scottville High School and married Albert Yanusz on November 26, 1947, after he returned from WWII. They lived near Fountain, where they worked the family dairy farm and raised their children. Sophie’s specialties were making farmer’s cheese and butter, raising chickens, and tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She also worked as a clerk and carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Fountain. Sophie was proud of her Lithuanian heritage, visiting relatives in Lithuania, attending local Lithuanian dinners, and creating traditional Lithuanian Easter eggs. In her later years, Sophie enjoyed oil painting and traveling with Albert, and playing Bingo and Scrabble with her friends. She was a great mother who valued the time she spent with family and friends. She never showed up to an event empty-handed, often bringing her popular rhubarb or apple squares.

Sophie is survived by her children, Bruce (Susan) Yanusz, Janette (David Kalasz) Virta, and Richard (LuAnn) Yanusz; grandchildren, Michael (Karen) Harter, Ronda Virta, Todd Virta, Eric Yanusz, and Elana Yanusz; 4 great grandchildren; her cat and companion, Kitsa; and many other wonderful family members and friends.

Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Yanusz; parents, John and Barbara Kran; brother, Robert Kran; and sisters-in-law, Aldonna Kran and Frances Figgins; brother-in-law Glenn Figgins; and nephew, Michael Figgins.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Ludington, with visitation starting at noon. Memorial contributions may be made to Mason County Animal Advocates or SpecialOlympicsAlaska.org.
