Obituary for Avery Kaplan

Avery Kaplan, Age 80 of Manistee died Saturday, November 18, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on January 30, 1937 in Detroit, Michigan the son of the late Samuel & Annette (Kaufman) Kaplan. He attended Wayne State University and earned his Masters in Education, and Saginaw Valley State University earning a Masters in school administration. He married Joyce Helminiak on December 29, 1979 in Cass City, Michigan.
Avery was employed as a school administrator in the Tuscola Intermediate School District. His hobbies included golf, reading, shooting, classic & opera music, watching boxing, and most all his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; Joyce (Helminiak) Kaplan, Sons; Samuel D. Kaplan and Todd (Janet) Nurnberger, daughters; Rachel (Kaplan) Rosas, Karen (Nurnberger) Sundbeck, & Krista (Nurnberger) & Ken Kwapiszewski, grandchildren; Kristina Rosas, Charles, Darien & Jade Jennell, Katherine & McKenna Bramble, Alora Sundbeck, Zachary & Tanner Nurnberger, and Julia & Laura Kwapiszewki, gret grandchildren; Nolan & Gianni Burkhart, Jaxon & Owen Kabat, and Chase & Jamie Jennell.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister; Adelle Rosenberg, and his in-laws; Anthony Helminiak, Sr. & Catherine & Felix Gauthier.
A Celebration of Life visitation will be held Tuesday from 6-8 PM with a time of sharing at 7:30 PM. At the Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Manistee.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation with Father Pablo Martinez officiating. Friends may call Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM until time of service.
Memorials in Avery’s name may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
