Irene Mayer, age 83, of Ludington, passed away on September 10, 2017.
Mrs. Mayer was born in Kalamazoo in 1933. She met her husband, Gerry, at Alma College where she majored in Biology and Chemistry. She spent the next year in Lansing, where she took her training in medical technology at Sparrow Hospital. She graduated with honors from both college and her Med Tech National Registry Exam.
Mrs. Mayer’s working days were spent in various hospital laboratories, but most of her work was done in medical research while her husband was in medical school. She worked in, and became head of the laboratory that set the first artificial kidney in this part of the U.S.
After moving to Ludington, Mrs. Mayer belonged to various clubs. She usually was involved with at least one volunteer organization, such as Hospice. She also loved music, and played the cello in several different area ensembles.
Mrs. Mayer is survived by her husband, Dr. Gerry Mayer; children, Ken, Alan, and Carol; grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her other family members preceded her in death.
As per her wishes, there will be no services held. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Mayer would rather have the money donated to Hospice, the Senior Center, or The People’s Church.
Arrangements were entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center of Ludington.
