Obituary for Harriet Talsma

Harriett Louise Talsma, 89, of Ludington Woods, formerly of Scottville, passed away peacefully with her family present. She was born on June 24, 1927 in Scottville to Bennie James and Ada Grave Elizabeth (Pappe) Thompson. After graduating from Scottville High School in 1945, Harriett graduated from beauty school in Grand Rapids. She returned to Mason County and married Mark Talsma in 1947 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ludington. Mark and Harriett enjoyed 66 years together until Mark passed away in 2014.

Harriett owned and operated Harriett’s Beauty Shop in Scottville until retiring in 1983. After retirement, she and Mark moved to Safety Harbor, FL and later, Mease Manor Adult Living in Dunedin, FL. After Mark passed away, she returned to Ludington Woods.

Harriet and Mark enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their cottage on Lake Michigan, square dancing, snowmobiling and playing Mah Jongg.

Harriett is survived by her three daughters, Joanne (David) Tutak of Clearwater, FL, Marlene Peacock of Plainwell, and Sheile Kowatch of Ludington; her four grandchildren, Julie (Steven) Maly, Jeff (Aparna) Tutak, Jennifer Tutak, and Cheryl Peacock; three great grandchildren, Marianna, Alexandra, and Lydia Maly; sister Bonnie (Dan) Ferguson of Fenwick; sisters-in-law, Margarette Reader, Marybelle Gerbers, Johanna Irish, and Annie VanderWall; and brother-in-law, William (Dorothy) Talsma.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Ada Thompson; husband, Mark; son-in-law, Richard Kowatch; sister, Virginia (Louis) Lund; and son-in-law, Bill Peacock.

Cremation has taken place and private family services will be scheduled for a later date.
