Gilbert Daniel Lauterwasser, age 89, of Ludington passed away on Friday January 20, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on February 27, 1927 in Milwaukee, WI, son of the late Fred and Ethel (Young) Lauterwasser. Gilbert enlisted in the United States Navy on October 15, 1944, serving during World War II, until his honorable discharge on December 30, 1947. He later enlisted again in the United States Army on September 27, 1949, and served in the Army during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged on March 19, 1959.
Gilbert married Brigitte Polzer on December 31, 1957 in Germany. Gilbert was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Brigitte Lauterwasser of Ludington; 3 daughters, Theresa (Tim) Schubert of Manistee, Michelle (Louis) Abrahamson of Ludington and Darlene (Jose) Chagoya of Ludington; 6 grandchildren, Christina (Nick) Simone of Ludington, Jessica Graham of Kalamazoo, Danyeil Schubert of Manistee, Justin (Chrissy Verheek) Schubert of DeLand, FL, Kyle Abrahamson of Ann Arbor and Bradley Chagoya of Ludington; and 3 great-grandchildren, Dannika Berentsen of Manistee, Nick and Giada Simone of Ludington.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
Cremation has taken place and a private military service conducted by the Ludington American Legion Post #76 will be held. Final interment will take place in the spring at South Victory Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Gilbert may be directed to Hospice of Michigan, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the Ludington American Legion Post #76.
