Obituary for Phoebe Ann Goulet

Phoebe Ann Goulet
On January 10, 2017, Phoebe left the Earth and a bright light was extinguished. Phoebe was born in Ludington in 1925 at Paulina Sterns Hospital to Doctor Leo Goulet and Elizabeth (Bessie) Pomeroy. Her father nicknamed her “muscles”. She lived her life in Ludington and Manistee and was well known in both communities. She attended Saint Simon’s High School, was active in 4H and spent summers studying music at Interlochen Arts Camp. Phoebe earned her degree in Journalism from Marquette University. She loved Lake Michigan and would float for hours in the “drink” as she liked to call it. Upon graduating from college, Phoebe’s father gave her a horse who she aptly named Car-shy. An avid skier and runner, Phoebe was known as “Stretch Stapleton” on the Ludington Social Services basketball team.

Working for the State of Michigan as a social worker in Child Protective Services, Phoebe affected many lives throughout her career, she remained active in the community after retirement in 1989, visiting the sick and later serving in the prison ministry. Phoebe loved to sing. She was an alto in the choir at Guardian Angels Church. She sang the loudest in church, laughed the hardest at herself and danced even after the band stopped playing.

Phoebe is survived by her brothers George, Lee, Joey, Robert, Leo, Michael Brooks and her sister MaryAnn, her thirteen children, Phoebe, Bill, John, Diana, Barbara, Jim, Chris, Lillian, George, Lee, Eva, Tim and Louise. Thirteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. 13 kids were a struggle sometimes, but she persevered, lived to be 91 years old and saw her grandkids have kids.

Phoebe was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jim and John, sister Barbara and her Grandson Michael.

She leaves you with a toast given by her son Tim at her 75th birthday party. “To a woman who loved the unlovable, who cared when there was nobody left who did, who put everyone before herself, and if I may borrow a few words I once heard her say about her mother; She did the best she could with what she had, which was pretty damn good.”

All are welcome to join Phoebe’s family and friends in a joyous celebration of her life on Saturday, January 21 at Saint Simon’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be at the Church at 12:00, with the funeral following at 1:00.

Memorial contributions in memory of Phoebe can be made to Cove or a charity of choice. Kindly share a memory or photo with the family at: www:oakgrovefh.com
