Obituary for Beryl L. Amburgey

Beryl L. Amburgey, age 91 of Manistee died Friday morning, November 6, 2015 at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. He was a kind man with a smile, a quick wit and a genuine concern for people’s safety.

He was born on August 18, 1924 in Pinckney, MI the son of Virgil & Grace (Guy) Amburgey. Beryl graduated from Pinckney High School at the age of 16. He entered the United States Army in 1943, was assigned to the 246th Engineer Combat Battalion and served in England, France, Holland, and Germany until his discharge in 1945.

Beryl joined the Michigan State Police in 1948 serving at the St. Clair, Erie, Romeo and Manistee Posts. He retired as Lieutenant and Post Commander of the Manistee Post in 1977. Beryl was then employed as the Civil Defense/Emergency Management Coordinator for Manistee County until his retirement in 1989.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, the Manistee Golf and Country Club, and the Elk Lodge #250. He loved baseball and enjoyed the outdoors, golf and bowling.

Beryl is survived by his wife of 65 years, Audrey Ann (Scott) Amburgey, one daughter; Linda (John) Holmes of Manistee, two sons; Larry (Denise) Amburgey of Lansing and Timothy (Tami) Amburgey of Custer, a son-in-law; Gregory Urcavich of Pulaski, WI, 8 grandchildren; Jennifer, Katherine, Melissa, Wendy, Justin, Samantha, Trevor, & Tyler, 10 great grandchildren; Christian, Alysse, Denalyn, Emma, Audrey, Addison, Jack, Olivia, Mia, and Ava, one brother; Robert (Virginia) Amburgey, two sisters; Audrey Scherdt and Roma Bezzeg, and a sister-in law; Donna Amburgey.

He was preceded in death by a daughter; Sherri Lynn Urcavich on September 7, 2015; two brothers; Vergil and Donald Amburgey, and four sisters; Carole Weber, Norma Presley, June Kelley and Sandra Stander.

Memorial Services for Beryl L. Amburgey will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee with Pastor John Hopper officiating. The Michigan State Police Honor Guard will be participating at the services. Final interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery Columbarium where members of the Manistee United Veteran Council will conduct Military Honors.

The family will receive friends at the Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Manistee on Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and again at the church on Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until time of service.
